Rules
Here are the rules you need to know to complete the White & Green Ribbon. Follow these rules to ensure your mountain journey is responsible, safe, and in harmony with nature.
- The journey must follow the Scandinavian mountain range, within Sweden or partially on the Norwegian side.
- The journey must be undertaken at your own responsibility and risk.
- Start and finish points are Grövelsjön in the south and Treriksröset in the north, or vice versa. At both start and finish, place your hand on the mountain station’s “Blue Door” in Grövelsjön or the boundary marker at Treriksröset.
- Participants choose their own route through the mountains but must pass west of or through the following locations:
- The eastern tip of Torneträsk
- Nikkaluokta
- Saltoluokta
- Jäckvik
- Håkafot
- Undersåker
For dog sledding, you can contact info@vitagronabandet.se to apply for an alternative route exemption in the best interest of the dogs.
- The journey must be completed under your own power. Assistance such as sled dogs, horses, kites, bicycles, or other non-motorized aids is allowed but will be recorded as a variation.
- The journey must be completed continuously without interruptions. However, breaks due to serious illness/injury (requiring medical attention) are permitted, provided the journey resumes at the same location without unnecessary delay and within the same season.
- We strongly recommend starting the Green Ribbon no earlier than 1 June and no later than 15 August, out of respect for nature, reindeer herding, and safety reasons. On Fjällsäkerhetsrådet, you’ll find valuable information to help ensure a safe journey.
- The journey must be completed without motorized assistance. Reasonable boat transportation across mountain lakes is an exception. “Unpleasant or challenging stretches” are never an acceptable reason for boat transport.
- When completing either Ribbon, carrying a satellite-connected emergency transmitter is mandatory.
- The journey must adhere to active environmental, natural, and cultural respect, including respect for reindeer herding.
- Follow the principles of the Right of Public Access, applicable laws, and common mountain sense. Littering, vandalism, or violations of protected area rules result in disqualification.
- Support is not allowed during segments of the journey in the form of food or equipment delivery by anyone other than the participant themselves. However, enjoying coffee with locals is highly encouraged! 😊
- Pre-arranged supplies must be picked up by the participant themselves during the journey.
- Food purchases or other services may use public or shared transportation (bus or car) on public roads. The journey must resume from the same location without unnecessary delay.
- The time for the journey is measured from the start date to the end date. Full days are counted, not hours.
- Any type of accommodation is allowed, from cabins to luxury suites. It is also permissible to be picked up for accommodation by friends or family, provided the journey resumes at the exact location where the participant was picked up. (The exception is being picked up by motor vehicle from the mountains, which must occur from a public road.)
- Upon completion (or within two weeks), participants must submit a report via a diploma form, detailing start and finish dates, the total distance traveled (in km), and other relevant information.
REMEMBER – as a Ribbon participant, you are an important ambassador for our shared responsibility to preserve the mountains as the unique natural and cultural environments they are, ensuring they remain so for future generations!
